A Time of Tremendous Growth

First and Second Grade is a time of tremendous growth as children become confident readers, writers, thinkers, and problem-solvers. Our teachers and language arts specialists work closely together to support each child's individual strengths, interests, and learning needs, ensuring every student is challenged, encouraged, and celebrated.Young readers develop fluency, comprehension, and a lifelong love of books, while writers learn to express their ideas with confidence. Drawing from their own experiences, students craft narratives that strengthen their voice, creativity, and understanding of the writing process.

In mathematics, students build deep conceptual understanding through the Singapore Math approach, progressing from hands-on exploration to visual models and abstract thinking. As their confidence grows, so does their ability to reason, solve problems, and communicate their mathematical thinking.

Throughout the day, students are encouraged to ask questions, take intellectual risks, and discover the joy of learning. West Chester Friends School provides a strong academic foundation while nurturing the curiosity, creativity, and independence that allow each child to grow with confidence.
